People frequently ask me why the rates of depression and anxiety are so high these days. Likely, the answer is a combination of trauma, lack of movement, poor diet, overconsumption of screen time, pressures of social media, and living in a terrifying world. I use a holistic approach to help heal the past trauma and make a treatment plan that will improve your teen’s mental and physical health. I do not believe that you can have excellent mental health with poor physical health and visa versa.

I strive to include parents in the treatment planning and enjoy looping them into sessions. I also share clinically relevant progress with parents regularly so you never feel in the dark about how your child is progressing towards their treatment goals.

Common questions about teen counseling

  • Everything your child says in counseling is confidential. However, if your child is threatening to harm themselves or others, I can break confidentiality and inform parents of safety issues.

I can and will make sure parents know the treatment goals and how their child is progressing. I can also let parents know how they can help support their child concerning their treatment goals and symptomology.

  • I happen to be a mother of 5—four of those being girls. Much of my experience comes from helping my teens through their anxiety and depression.

I also have 15 years of experience serving in different roles in our church’s teen youth group. I love working with teens due to the passion and energy they bring to life.

In addition, I have spent the last year working in an intensive outpatient setting with teen groups. Working in a clinical setting has helped me to hone my skills in working with kids who are suffering from suicidal ideation as well as non-suicidal self-injury. I am experienced in assessing kids for safety and conducting a risk assessment when any suicidal thoughts are reported. I also understand the full continuum of care and can make appropriate recommendations if I feel your child is too acute for an individual therapy setting.

  • I will ensure that you, as a parent, are part of the treatment team from the beginning to the end of treatment. Within the first few sessions, I will meet with parents to review treatment goals, and you can expect to hear from me regularly about your child’s progress and what you can be doing at home to help support them. After all, I only have them 1 hour a week; you have them for the other 167! Teens who do best in treatment have parents who are engaged and helping at home.
